New Testament

Titus was a Gentile Christian and we meet him as a follower of Paul and Barnabas in Jerusalem, when the Apostolic Council was convened there around 51 AD to resolve the issue of whether circumcision and the other ceremonial provisions of the law were obligatory for Gentile Christians. Under such circumstances, Paul being found with Titus in Jerusalem, it was natural that he should not consent to his being circumcised, as the Judaizers were wont to do (Gal. 2:1). Subsequently, becoming Paul's associate, he is sent by him repeatedly to Corinth, and during his fourth apostolic journey he is left by him in Crete. From Crete, the apostle then continued his journey to visit the Churches in Asia Minor and, leaving Timothy in Ephesus, when he returned to Rome, he addressed this letter to Titus, at the end of which he calls him to come to Nicopolis. Indeed, it seems that he met there after Paul, as we can conclude from information in the Second Epistle to Timothy (4:10), according to which, when the apostle was facing the danger of martyrdom in Rome, Titus was in Dalmatia.
