New Testament

The Church of Philippi, a city in Macedonia near present-day Kavala, was founded by the holy Paul during his second apostolic journey around the year 52 AD. This was the first Church founded in Europe (Acts 16:12). Accompanied by Silas and Timothy, the holy Apostle addressed himself first to the Jews in Philippi, and the first to be drawn to the Christian faith was Lydia, a seller of purple, who was baptized with her entire household. On the other hand, because of the healing that Paul performed on a girl who had a spirit of divination, both Paul and Silas were beaten and imprisoned, and the miracle of their release from bonds was the reason for the jailer to be attracted to the Christian faith, who was baptized with his entire household. The details of the imprisonment of the two Apostles and what followed are recounted in the 16th chapter of Acts (verses 16-40).
The Apostle visited the Church of Philippi for the second time during his third apostolic journey around the year 57 AD, and for the third time, when he returned to Jerusalem towards the end of this journey (Acts 20:6).
The Apostle wrote this letter from Rome during the first year of his first imprisonment. He took occasion to write it because of the illness and recovery of Epaphroditus, with whom the Philippians had sent financial support to the Apostle. "So when Epaphroditus recovered, so that the Philippians, who in the meantime had been informed of the illness of their envoy (Philippians 2:25-26), would not be anxious, he urged him to return, and on this occasion the Apostle wrote this letter, to express his gratitude to the Philippians for having remembered him, but also to address them with advice and instructions according to the information he had received from Epaphroditus.
