New Testament

Gospel of Matthew 1 in Greek
The author of the first Gospel is the apostle and evangelist Matthew. Before the Lord called him to the apostolic office, he was named Levi (Mark 2:14, Luke 5:27); but when he followed Christ, he received the surname Matthew. The account of his calling by the Lord is also recorded by himself in his Gospel (chap. 9:9-13). Matthew previously had the profession of a tax collector, settled in Capernaum, which also seems to have been his hometown. When the Lord met him sitting at the tax office and called him to follow Him, he did so without any hesitation or delay. According to tradition, Matthew preached the Gospel to the Jews, and afterwards he traveled to Ethiopia and Parthia, where he died.
The Gospel of Matthew was first written in the Hebrew (Aramaic) language, because he originally intended it for the Hebrews. However, he himself or another apostolic man translated it into the Greek language. The Gospel according to Matthew was written between the years 60-66 A.D.
