New Testament

Gospel of Matthew 1 in Greek
The evangelist Luke was not a Jew, but a Gentile, and according to tradition, he came from Antioch in Syria. Luke was one of the closest and most beloved companions and co-travelers of the apostle Paul. He accompanied Paul on certain journeys, for example, during his second missionary journey from Troas to Philippi, and during his third journey from Philippi to Jerusalem and from Caesarea to Rome. He was with Paul both during his first imprisonment and his second, during which, as is evident from the Second Letter to Timothy (4:11), he was 'alone' with the Apostle. Justly, therefore, Luke was dear to the apostle Paul, and as a physician, he most likely offered his medical services to the Apostle.
The evangelist Luke is the author not only of the third Gospel but also of the Acts of the Apostles. Furthermore, according to tradition, the evangelist Luke preached the Christian religion in Dalmatia and Gaul, and as Saint Gregory of Nazianzus also states, he came to Achaia, where he wrote his Gospel.
The time of the writing of the third Gospel, which Luke addressed to the 'most excellent Theophilus,' has been placed by some before the first imprisonment of Paul, this being because the Acts, which were written after the Gospel, are considered to have been written in Rome during the Apostle's first imprisonment (that is, around 62 A.D.). There were among them also those who argued that the Gospel was written after the fall of Jerusalem. However, the prevailing view is that the third Gospel was written before 70 A.D.
